Altrua HealthShare is one of many non-profit health sharing organizations nationwide. We have thousands of members across the country and our home office is located in Austin, Texas.
As a non-profit HealthShare, we are NOT insurance. Because we are not insurance, we can charge less than health insurance. Why? We don't have the burden of making profits or paying for sales commissions and expensive office overhead. We can limit our members to those people who share a clean, healthy lifestyle. You aren't paying for someone else's unhealthy habits.
Since our founding, we have paid every eligible medical need in accordance with the membership guidelines.
The health sharing concept has been around for almost three decades. It is a proven, conservative alternative to health insurance that is growing in popularity every day.
The idea for health sharing was born as the happy ending to a tragic story. An uninsured family was hit in their car by a truck. The husband and two of three children survived, but with severe injuries and no way of paying for them. A local charity shared the man's story in their newsletter and before his children left the hospital the bill had been paid through the grace and concern of others.
He took inspiration from this wonderful act of kindness and was determined to create an organized method people could use to help with each other's medical needs-one that was outside the bureaucracy and overhead of insurance companies.
Thus, health sharing began. It has grown and thrived as the costs of health care have sky rocketed and people have become more and more frustrated with health insurance companies and constantly rising premiums.
